Large-scale installation in a shipping container dedicated to the air collision 1 July 2002, which took the life of 72 people, mostly children. The concept of this work concerned the ever-increasing regulations for air traffic and safety where human or technological error can strike anyone, and used a shipping container as an allegory to the airplane carrier. An aerial image of the crash location of flight 2837 was inserted under see-through plastic flooring providing viewers the sensation of standing in the air. A parachute in which viewers could “take-off” was installed in the centre of the container with flexible rubber cords, and finally, a smoke machine created the feeling of being suspended in the clouds. The installation focused attention on the unknown safety of mass transportation and was dedicated to all of the victims of the crash.
The subject of this series of photographs is the terrorist act that took place between September 1st – 3rd, 2004, in the small city of Beslan, located in North Ossetia-Alaniya in Russia on the border with Ingushetia and Chechnya.
Reshaped wine bottle nailed in the middle of a 50 x 90 cm wooden base, and flanked by five metal cork-openers placed in different positions simulating human degradation from alcoholism.
Nina11 used this gas mask during her 16-hour flight to Taiwan in May 2003 when the country had the fastest rate of death from SARS. Suspending the mask in an aquarium with a constantly purifying and oxygenizing system symbolizes the relief upon the subsiding epidemic. Yet, the plastic surrounding the mask keeps the air, which remained from the time of the time of SARS, sealed from purification.
Self-Portrait is a series of paintings made by Nina11. The process consists of applying oil or acrylic paint directly on the face of the subject and then rolling/printing their image on canvas or paper. The resulting image is a portrait devoid of race, gender and class status, making each subject similar to each other by leveling the socially constructed difference between individuals to present a true representation of the subject.
